Movie Review:The Woman In Black 2- Angel of Death

YOU can’t leave a good thing alone, and certainly not if it is a castle with a haunted past on an island with dead children to account for. So The Woman in Black returns, nearly three years later — this time with a woman with a busload of children in her care at the centre of it.

The premise is nice, and you have to appreciate Harper for going the length he does to establish the film’s World War II setting. Given that we know the battles here will be all fought in that castle eventually, he could have cut some corners. However, no. So Eve (Fox) and headmistress Gene (McCrory) are shepherding the children to that house during the bombing of London, when children were sent out to the countryside to be kept safe.

They board an antique train from an antique station, and ride a rickety old bus to the island, across marshes and mist on a narrow winding road. It’s a beautiful scene laden with foreboding. It’s a strange place to be sending children for safekeeping, but as the official of the Education Board explains, they have few options.

Things start happening almost as soon as the children reach the house, and particularly vulnerable is Edward (Pendergast), who has just lost his parents in the war.

However, again Harper makes an effort to give the house the semblance of a school, with Fox doing a credible job as the compassionate teacher who senses something wrong. The only one who lends her fears a sympathetic ear is Harry (Irvine), a dashing pilot stationed off the island in the village.

The Woman in Black 2 isn’t as scary as its prequel, assumes most of us have watched the first film, and sees a surpring number of deaths. You also wish some of the story was about the children separated from parents put through horrors. However, the focus almost entirely is on Fox.

Still the care with which Harper frames this story, which can hardly vary very much from the first, makes the effort worthwhile.

WHEN death finally came to Louis Zamperini, it came in the form of pneumonia. He was 97. That was this past year — 70-odd years after he had participated in the Olympics, fought in World War II, survived being stranded on a raft at sea for 47 days, been tortured as a PoW for nearly two years in Japanese camps, and battled severe post-traumatic stress disorder to find God.

Not all of this could have happened to one man, you think. And yet it does. Unbroken is a testament to as much the strength of human spirit as the power of the desire to live. There are almost no heroes in this chapter of the war treated mostly as a postscript. But there are all kinds of fighters, and Zamperini (O’Connell) is among the toughest of them all.

In her second directorial venture, Jolie gets it right in most departments. The film is based on the book by Laura Hillenbrand on Zamperini, the Coen brothers are co-scriptwriters, and Roger Deakins (No Country for Old Men, True Grit) is the director of photography. Her Unbroken is both disturbingly intimate and ambitiously grand, and her own immense belief in Zamperini’s story is quite evident.

And yet Unbroken is also moulded in Jolie’s own zealous mission to better the world. There are few greys in Zamperini’s world, and there are few redemptive features on the other side. While he finished eighth in the Olympics he ran, even that’s left carefully vague in the film. The darkness that finally flooded in when Zamperini was saved and brought home, leaving him full of anger and thoughts of revenge, are mentioned as only an after-thought. And the Japs are effeminate beings with serious issues of self-worth. Unbroken doesn’t just hint at the power of forgiveness, it lays it out thick for you. Most such war films also rise from being good to great by the bond its men share. Unbroken is surprisingly un-evocative of that. As a result, while you wonder at Zamperini’s story, he remains a character rather than a person of flesh and blood whom you ache for, despite the wonderful effort by O’Connell. Jolie’s awkwardness is most evident in the parts where Zamperini is with his parents and siblings. O’Connell looks uncomfortable and his family are almost cardboard Italians filling up the background — even when brother Pete is turning him into a talented runner

Jolie begins well, in one of the most detailed scenes of a bomber aircraft, depicting both the claustrophobic space inside and the vast skies around. There are hair-raising scenes of approaching attackers and the vulnerability of the crew inside. Their bombed plane finally has to crashland into sea, and only three of them survive.

Besides Zamperini, that includes Phil (Gleeson) and Mac (Wittrock). Phil draws his strength from religion but Mac holds on to very little hope of making out alive. It’s Zamperini who holds this ship together, literally, through the sheer force of thinking positively. O’Connell channels that instructive leadership nicely even when paying deference to Phil, technically his senior. They survive by first catching a bird, and then learning to fish. Their lips chap, their skin peels off, they lose weight, they are parched for water, and finally Mac dies. On the 47th day, they are taken prisoner by a Japanese ship. Here begins the third chapter in Zamperini’s life, one in which he is tormented by the commander of the prison camp, Watanabe, nicknamed ‘The Bird’ (Ishihara). Later listed as one of the most wanted Japanese war criminals, Watanabe is vicious, unrelenting and shares a particular love/hate relationship with Zamperini. Jolie is most surefooted in the bond the two share, though Watanabe comes off worse for it. The scenes between them crackle with tension, animosity and a strange attraction. As a lesser known chapter of World War II, Unbroken is a welcome addition. However, as a particularly special chapter of it, Unbroken required us to care for Zamperini more than we may end up doing.

Movie Review:Lingaa

Lingaa by KS Ravikumar claims to star Rajinikanth in a double role. That of Lingaa a super clever thief and his grandfather, Raja Lingeswaran. But the overpowering presence is that of Rajinikanth himself in the third role. There are so many references to Rajini the person that the real and reel are never quite separated.

The politically loaded dialogues are in abundance. They reflect his position vis-a-vis politics as well. Santhanam who plays the younger Lingaa's sidekick says "even if you say no, the people won't leave you." Anushka Shetty who plays Rajini's love interest suggests he could go all the way to Parliament. The message is clear. Rajini has not made up his mind on whether or not to enter politics but the people have made up their mind about him. And that the day he says yes, PM or CM post is his for the asking.

That apart, the story of Lingaa is simple. So simple that whoever filed a case claiming theft of his script must be deluding himself on originality. The story is of Raja Lingeswaran who sacrifices everything he has to build a dam for the sake of his subjects. He runs into a dispute with the British in this tale set in 1939. Sonakshi Sinha plays his love interest.

A temple that the king builds is shut down and can't be opened by anyone but his DNA. Hence Anushka who plays an intrepid reporter is assigned the job of getting the younger Lingaa into the plot.

With Rajini in almost every scene, it is paisa vasool for his fans. But at 175 minutes, the film drags in the middle portion and could have done with some deft editing. The film suffers from the lack of a strong and powerful antagonist, a la Ramakrishna in Padayappa or Suman in Sivaji. Telugu actor Jagapathi Babu is an apology of a villain.

Music by A R Rahman is a letdown. Except for the 'indianne' score sung by AR himself, rest of the music is disappointing. For the Rajini-Rahman team that gave hit music in Sivaji, Enthiran, this film doesn't match up.

But where the film scores in is having Rajini as the hero. It relies on the time-tested template of making the film ride on his shoulders. The make up has made him look atleast 15 years younger and cinematography and action sequences are a treat.

There is however no chemistry between Rajini and his two heroines. Perhaps that's why almost as a disclaimer he had said at the Telugu audio function that he found it tough to dance with heroines his daughters' age.

Watch it if you are a Rajini fan. Even as a masala commercial, Lingaa entertains.

Movie Review:Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya

हम्प्टी नाम है मेरा. फुकरा हूं पर दिल का अच्छा हूं. लड़कियों के साथ फ्लर्ट करता हूं, पर कोई किसी लड़की की मजबूरी का फायदा उठाए तो उसकी वाट लगा देता हूं. पापा की दिल्ली के एक कॉलेज में स्टेशनरी की दुकान है और वो अपने चमकते सिर की तरह चमको टाइप कूल हैं. बिल्कुल डीडीएलजे के ओ पुच्ची ओ कोका वाले अनुपम खेर अंकल की तरह. दो दोस्त भी हैं. शॉन्टी और पोपलू. एक दम मेरी तरह मक्कार और क्यूट. सब सेट चल रहा है. बस फेल होने का डर है. तो मैं जाता हूं हाथ में बल्ला और हुस्न पर हेलमेट का हिजाब डाले प्रोफेसर शास्त्री के पास. वहां मिलती है मैडम. नाम है काव्या.
हाय. मैं हूं काव्या. बचपन से ही हॉट. प्यार व्यार नहीं किया क्योंकि बड़ी दीदी का प्यार फेल हो गया. तो पापा फिर से गुस्सा हो जाएंगे न. मेरे अरमानों ने पंख लगाकर उड़ने के बाद करीना कपूर वाले डिजाइनर लहंगे पर अटकने पर समझौता कर लिया. उसके लिए आई हूं दिल्ली. पर पॉकेट में नहीं हैं पैसे. यहां एक चेप बंदा भी मिल गया है. हम्प्टी डम्प्टी नाम है उसका.
तो अब हम्प्टी मीट्स काव्या. तो होती है दोस्ती. शरारतें. आजमाइशें. गाने. मस्ती और आखिर में प्यार. पर काव्या प्यार कैसे कर सकती है. उसका तो रोका हो चुका है एनआरआई अंगद के साथ. डॉक्टर है. फिट बॉडी है. अच्छा कुक है. कोई ऐब नहीं. और फिर प्यार पर पहरेदारी के लिए बाऊ जी भी तो हैं. अब क्या करेगी काव्या बाई अंबाले वाली. दिल्ली का फेल पास हम्प्टी या सेट अमरीकन मुंडा अंगद. और फिर प्यार के हाथों वशीभूत होकर हम्प्टी अपनी दुलहनिया लेने जाता है और आ जाते हैं स्टोरी में ढेर सारे ट्विस्ट.

एक ब्रेक लेते हैं. कहीं आपको डीडीएलजे तो याद नहीं आ रही. सही आ रही है. ये फिल्म डीडीएलजे का देसी चिल्ड आउट वर्जन ही है. इसमें खूब सारी कॉमेडी, इमोशन, थोड़ी सी फाइट, यारी, प्यारी, परिवार, गाने और संस्कारी पर कुछ क्रोधी बाबू जी हैं. अगर आपको फनी, मसालेदार, एंटरटेनिंग फिल्म देखनी है, तो ये इस वीकएंड की बेस्ट च्वाइस है.
आलिया भट्ट को भले ही देश के राष्ट्रपति का नाम न पता हो, पर एक्टिंग की एबीसी उनसे सोते में भी सुन सकते हैं आप. क्यूट, सेंटी, वॉना बी, हर मात्रा मुकम्मल ढंग से माप उड़ेली गई है काव्या के किरदार में. वरुण ने भी अच्छा काम किया है. मैं तेरा हीरो की तरह वह घड़ी घड़ी चीप जोक्स या पंच मारने की कोशिश नहीं करते. कभी लाउड तो कभी अंडरकरंट इमोशंस को उन्होंने बखूबी निभाया है. वेल डन माई बॉय. आशुतोष राणा को पर्दे पर देखना अच्छा लगा. बिलाशक वह बहुत बेहतरीन एक्टर हैं. और ये रोल उनकी रेंज का सुबूत देता है. इसके अलावा हम्प्टी के दोस्त पोपलू के रोल में साहिल वेद ने अच्छी एक्टिंग की है. खासतौर पर अंगद के साथ गे रोमैंस वाले सीन जबर हैं. अंगद से याद आया. सिद्धार्थ शुक्ल भी तो हैं इसमें. आनंदी के पति वाले सिद्धार्थ. इस फिल्म में उनके हिस्से ज्यादा फुटेज नहीं आई. जितनी भी आई, उसमें वह ठीक लगे. पर साइडकिक से बोहनी कितनी बरकत देगी. कहा नहीं जा सकता

फिल्म की कहानी बहुत नई ताजी नहीं है. पर स्क्रीनप्ले में कसावट है. मतलब बीच में एक बार भी आप व्हाट्स एप या फेसबुक चेक नहीं करते. गानों को छोड़कर. एकआध गाने रेगुलर टाइप्स हैं. जो अच्छे हैं, वो तो हैं ही हैं. डायरेक्टर शशांक ने अपने प्रॉड्यूसर करण जौहर के गुण धर्म तो अपनाए ही, डायलॉग्स में देसीपन और असली रंगबाजी ला उसे और जमीनी और यकीना बना दिया है. क्लाइमेक्स थोड़ा ज्यादा फिल्मी हो गया है. पर इट्स ओके. तब तक हम हम्प्टी डम्प्टी और उसकी क्यूट काव्या के प्यार में अदमुंदे हो चुके होते हैं. वैसे भी फिल्म कहके फिल्मी होती है. हम सब की तरह. कहीं कहीं. और जब होती है. तब बोर तो कतई नहीं करती.
फिल्म में स्टीरियोटाइप्स का अभाव है. जो कि जाहिर है कि अच्छी बात है. लड़के को जब लगता है कि लड़की किस करेगी, तब उसका पपलू बन जाता है. लड़की को जब लगता है कि लड़का फोन उठा रोमैंस करेगा. वह घोड़े ओएलक्स कर सो रहा होता है. जब लगता है कि बाबू जी फायर हो जाएंगे. वह बालक को पास बुला सुट्टा उधार मांगते हैं. जब लगता है कि प्यार में विलेन बोदा होगा. वो स्टड निकलता है. यानी फिल्म में कहीं भी पहले से प्रिडिक्ट कर सुस्ताने की गुंजाइश नहीं.
एंटरटेनमेंट-एंटरटेनमेंट-एंटरटेनमेंट चाहने वालों के लिए, यही है राइट च्वाइस बेबी. ओह.याह

कलाकारः रितेश देशमुख, सिद्धार्थ मल्होत्रा और श्रद्धा कपूरमोहित सूरी की फिल्मों में हमेशा से डार्क फैक्टर रहता है और एक विलेन में भी वह फैक्टर फिल्म के शुरू से लेकर आखिर तक बना रहता है और यही फैक्टर जादुई काम भी करता है. पहला ऐसा मौका होगा जब फिल्म में विलेन्स की भरमार है. कहानी मजेदार है. कहीं थोड़ी उलझाऊ लगती है लेकिन मोहित अपने डायरेक्शन से इसे बखूबी खींच ले जाते हैं, और फिर श्रद्धा, रितेश और सिद्धार्थ की तिकड़ी ने भी अपनी एक्टिंग से इसे चार चांद लगाने का काम किया है. फिल्म बांधे रखती है और इसमें दर्शकों को खींचने वाला सारा मसाला मौजूद है, जिसमें बेहतरीन म्यूजिक से लेकर थ्रिलिंग मूमेंट तक शामिल है. एक्टिंग और डायरेक्शन फिल्म की खासियत बनकर उभरते हैं.
कहानी में कितना दम
गुरु (सिद्धार्थ) आयशा (श्रद्धा) से मिलता है और उसके नटखट अंदाज का दीवाना हो जाता है. लेकिन वो एक स्थानीय गुंडे के लिए काम करता है. वहीं, राकेश (रितेश) अपनी बीवी के कोसे जाने से काफी दुखी रहता है. बस ये सभी किरदार एक-दूसरे का रास्ता काटते हैं और फिर कुछ अप्रत्याशित घटनाओं का सिलसिला शुरू हो जाता है. जिसमें रहस्य, रोमांच और खून-खराबे का भरपूर समागम है. एक विलेन है, एक हीरो जैसा विलेन है और साइकिक विलेन है. मतलब विलेन्स की भरमार. एक विलेन दक्षिण कोरियाई फिल्म आइ सॉ द डेविल का भारतीय संस्करण है. लेकिन मोहित की किरदारों को पिराने की जबरदस्त कला यहां उभरकर आती है. कहानी कहने का उनका अनूठा अंदाज है और मोहित का हुनर विदेशी कहानी को देसी अंदाज में मस्त अंदाज में कहना है..
स्टार अपील
रितेश देशमुख की हमशकल्स ने पिछले हफ्ते बॉक्स ऑफिस पर अच्छा-खासा हल्ला-बोल किया था. इस हफ्ते वे फिर से दर्शकों की कसौटी पर हैं. फिल्म में उनकी ऐक्टिंग बेहतरीन है और यह उनके यादगार किरदारों में से एक बन पड़ा है. रितेश फिल्म में जान डालने का काम करते हैं. सिद्धार्थ मल्होत्रा भी एंग्री यंगमैन के तौर पर निखरकर सामने आए हैं. उनको देखकर लगता है कि यह एक बड़े स्टार का आगाज हो गया है. वे ऐक्शन करते जमते है और दर्द बहुत ही बढ़िया अंदाज में बयान करते हैं. श्रद्धा स्क्रीन पर आते ही पूरे माहौल को बदलकर रख देती हैं. आशिकी-2 वाला उनका जादू बरकरार है. इसके अलावा रेमो फर्नांडिज और रितेश की बीवी बनीं आमना शरीफ भी अपना बेस्ट देते नजर आते हैं.
कमाई की बात
फिल्म मीडियम बजट बताई जाती है, और मोहित सूरी की यह खासियत रही है कि वे कम बजट में मेगा हिट देने में माहिर है. फिल्म के म्यूजिक को इसका एक्स फैक्टर कहा जा सकता है. इसके अलावा सस्पेंस और रोमांच को दर्शक पसंद भी करते हैं. फिल्म में यूथ को कनेक्ट करने वाला मसाला भी मौजूद है. सिद्धार्थ और श्रद्धा पहले ही यूथ ऑडियंस की कसौटी पर हंसी तो फंसी और आशिकी-2 के जरिये खरे उतर चुके हैं. फिल्म की स्पीड भी अच्छी है, और खींची हुई नहीं लगती है.

डीनो अपने मां-पापा का नालायक बेटा है. क्योंकि बड़ा बेटा लायक जो है. इसलिए बागी बनना पड़ा. उधर के के पापा शेट्टी बीयर बार चलाते हैं और कॉलेज में शॉर्ट पैंट पहन जाने को बुरा नहीं मानते. पर साथ में यह भी मानते हैं कि लड़की की शादी शेट्टियों में ही और वह भी 21 साल से पहले हो जानी चाहिए.

अरमान उस बालक की तरह हैं, जो जब ज्यादा खुश और दुखी होता है तो उसे अदरक की जरूरत पड़ जाती है. दरअसल बालक का गला पहले बैठता है, फिर चिंचियाती सी आवाज निकलती है और फिर दंडकारण्य सी घनी उसकी भौंहों के नीचे चमकती आंखें भी चिंचियाने लगती हैं. ज्यादा कुछ क्या कहें. बालक नया है. बस यूं ही समझ लीजिए कि बहुत निकले तेरे अरमां. फिर भी बहुत कम निकले. आपसे एक्टिंग न हो पाएगी कपूर खानदान के नए बालक.
फिल्म की एक्ट्रेस दीक्षा सेठ करिश्मा के रोल में कुछ जमी हैं. डेब्यू के हिसाब से उनकी एक्टिंग ठीक है. फिल्म के बाकी कलाकारों ने अपना काम ठीक ढंग से किया है. मगर फूहड़ कहानी और बेदम हीरो का बोझ वे क्या आज तक कोई भी नहीं ढो पाया है.
एक झटका और है. इस फिल्म का म्यूजिक ए आर रहमान ने दिया है. तो क्या हुआ जो गाने सुनकर नहीं लगता. अब उन्होंने भी ठेका तो नहीं उठा रखा न हर फिल्म में नए सिरे से जादू जगाने का.

पुराने हैदराबाद के मोगलपुरा इलाके में एक मध्यवर्गीय मुस्लिम परिवार है. इस परिवार की बड़ी बेटी है बिलकिस उर्फ बॉबी. बॉबी जासूस बनना चाहती है. मगर तमाम स्थापित डिटेक्टिव एजेंसी उससे फूटने को कहती हैं क्योंकि उसके पास डिग्री और प्रफेशनल तमीज नहीं. ऐसे में बॉबी मुहल्ले की चुगलखोरी लेवल की जासूसी कर अपने पैशन को जिंदा रखती है. इसमें उसके दो दोस्त कम हेल्पर कैफे ओनर शेट्टी और वेटर अली मदद करते हैं. बॉबी के कस्टमर में पड़ोस की बुआ और एक टीवी एंकर तसव्वुर भी है. बाद में यही तसव्वुर बॉबी का दोस्त भी बन जाता है. खैर, मसला ये नहीं है. मसला ये है कि भरे पूरे परिवार से आई बॉबी के बाप को उसका यूं दिन रात डोलना पसंद नहीं. अब्बू बड़ी बेटी से बात नहीं करते और अम्मी उसे आंखों में बसाकर रखती हैं.
फिर आता है बॉबी का बड़ा ब्रेक. रुकती है एक लंबी गाड़ी, उतरता है भारी आवाज वाला सेठ और देता है उसे एक काम. एक लड़की को खोजने का. खोज का ये सिलसिला चलता है और बॉबी मालामाल होने लगती है. मगर फिर एक हकीकत जानकर उसके पैरों तले की जमीन खिसक जाती है. इन सबके बीच गली के गुंडे लाला की हरकतें और तसव्वुर का कन्फ्यूजन भी जारी है. बॉबी जासूस सिर्फ केस ही नहीं अपनी लाइफ के भी कुछ पजल्स आखिरी में सॉल्व कर लेती है और सब ठीक हो जाता है. एक कथित तौर पर अच्छी हिंदी फिल्म की तरह.
फिल्म की कहानी में कुछ चीजें नई ताजी हैं. जैसे बिना लाउड और फनी हुए एक लेडी जासूस का किरदार पेश करना. बॉबी हमारे गली मुहल्ले की ही एक लड़की लगती है. वह न तो गाजर खाती है और न ही तकियाकलाम पेश करती है. भरपूर नॉर्मल लगती है. बॉबी के अलावा शहर हैदराबाद भी खालिस घरेलू और अंदरूनी अंदाज में सामने आया है. लेकिन सेकंड हाफ में जासूसी केस के अलावा जिंदगी के तमाम पेच खोलने के फेर में कहानी उलझ जाती है. राइटर और डायरेक्टर सब कुछ समेटने के फेर में धीमे हो जाते हैं. और रही सही कसर बीच बीच में ठूंस दिए गए गाने पेश कर देते हैं. कहानी अंत से पहले ही खुल जाती है और ये अंदाजा लगाना कठिन नहीं होता कि ये भागादौड़ी का खेल क्यों चल रहा होगा. और यहीं पर फिल्म कुछ मात खाती नजर आती है.
फिल्म में विद्या बालन की एक्टिंग उनके स्तर और ख्याति के अनुरूप है. उनकी और अली फैजल की जोड़ी फ्रेश और क्यूट लगी है. अली फैजल को भी गुड मार्क्स क्योंकि विद्या बालन के साथ फ्रेम शेयर करना और कच्चा न पड़ना शाबासी का काम है. फिल्म के बाकी किरदारों का चयन समझदारी के साथ हुआ है. राजेंद्र गुप्ता, सुप्रिया पाठक शाह, जरीना वहाब जैसे कई एक्टर फिल्म में दिखे और अपने किरदार में खूब जज्ब दिखे.
डायरेक्टर समर शेख ने अपनी पहली फिल्म में कई अच्छी चीजें की हैं. मगर बेहतर होता कि वह स्टोरी की रफ्तार पर काम करते और चालू चोंचलों मसलन बिला वजह गानों से बचते. फिल्म का प्लस प्वाइंट हैं नए किस्म की थीम, विद्या की एक्टिंग और अली के साथ उनकी पेयरिंग. माइनस प्वाइंट हैं कुछ सुस्त और फैला सेकंड हाफ और उसमें गानों की ठूसम ठूसी. तो बॉबी जासूस है फिफ्टी फिफ्टी मामला.
